“Dare thing†in most YA books is the one that makes the relatioship between two “enemies†possible. Usually, it is the most interesting part - the type of dare and how they overcome their differences. In this book main heorine was just impossible. I could not stand her and her mumbling and self-esteem problems. It wasn’t even funny.
Lily and Parker were best friends up until 4 years ago when her father left her and his mother died. He asked for space then disappeared from her life. When he came back, he wasn't the same and they've been virtually enemies ever since. Now that their junior year is over, Lily's friend has decided to drag her to a party, and it's at this party where a juvenile game of Truth or Dare will give the two their second chance. Well, maybe...if Lily can sit still long enough for Parker to explain and apologize and win her love back.I was very impressed with The Dating Dare. Surprisingly so. I don't normally read or like YA fiction because it tends to remind me just how immature and self-absorbed teenagers are. And yes, the characters in this story are most definitely teens for all their crazy emotions and immature behavior, but it wasn't nearly as angsty as I had been expecting and both Parker and Lily are likable, layered characters. It is a clean romance, so don't be expecting any kind of steam aside from a few hot kisses and some of their inner thoughts. And I think it's better off for the lack of steam because it allows the story to center on the two characters and their relationship rather than any kind of sexy bedroom time. I don't see any other work listed for this author, so I'm just going to have to hope there's more coming from them and this world they've created around Parker, Lily and their friends.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I didn't quite know what to expect since this is my first read from this author, but I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the story. It was fast paced enough to keep me interested but not so fast it lost me or left out important details. The characters were lively and intriguing. Parker and Lily's story is one of childhood crushes, first time broken hearts, loss, and all the stupid things we do as teenagers. Parker and Lily have both had to deal with the loss of a parent and each tried to move on from that in their own way. Secretly harboring feelings for one another for many years, even through out their estrangement, they are forced to face those feelings once and for all. It's sometimes comical, sometimes angering and sometimes heartbreaking but in the end it's what was meant to be. I like the ending and would be interested if they author chose to write a follow up about them. Maybe a book showing them a bit in the future, in college, navigating their relationship after the honeymoon phase has worn off. Would love to see how it all works out for them.
This is a sweet read. My first book by this author and I plan on reading many more books by them. I really enjoyed this book. This book has sadness from loss, crazy high school parties, fun, laughter, anger, dumb boys, mischievous girls, missed opportunities, and finding love. The two main characters had spent their childhood as neighbors and best friends. Until tragedy and loss struck them both in different ways. They lost themselves, their way, and each other. But with the help of their friends and a dare, they are forced to spend time together. Bringing up old emotions can be hard, but these two prove how sometimes it's worth it. The writing is great, the characters are strong, and the story will keep you sucked in until the very end. Voluntary review of an advanced reader's copy via booksprout.
YA story where each of the protagonists has one parent. The mother knows what's up; the father, focused on his son's sports training, does not. The boy is a hound dog, but only because he never got the girl he wanted. The girl, of course, had less amatory experience because of her absent-father issues; she wanted the boy, too. It's summer, and the pair is alone at a lake house. After the famous dare. There are a few typos here and there, not many. The story was OK, but kind of superficial. I liked the characters, but now that the story's over, I don't care about their future like I think I was supposed to. I've read much much worse.
A well-written teen/young adult story of a second chance after everything fell apart the year they really both needed each other. A clean romance.
