Alan Bell's memoir tells the story of an ambitious young lawyer in South Florida with a bright future whose life gets turned upside down by a mysterious illness. We follow Bell from the glamorous and exciting life of a South Florida prosecutor in the 80's at the prestigious 110 Tower, to a life in exile in a sterile bubble in the Arizona desert. In his search for a cure and relief, he traveled the country and saw hundreds of doctors. From time at a "leper colony", to a castle in Mexico, to the beaches of California, Bell never gave up on his quest to find answers.Ultimately, this is a story about the triumph of the human spirit and how one man, driven by his own suffering, the love of his daughter, and his desire to help others, became an advocate and avenger. Although charities to help those afflicted by mutiple chemical sensitivities existed, Bell took note of the fact that there wasn't enough being done to prevent illness and a lack of awareness of the dangers chemicals pose to human health. He founded the Environmental Health Foundation (EHF) and managed to recruit the nation's top scientists and experts on environmentally linked illnesses to form the scientific advisory board. Though too ill to attend the first summit, he got NIH to sponsor and enjoyed the endorsement and support of celebrities and then VP Al Gore.Alan Bell isn't just an advocate for those who suffer multiple chemical sensitivies, but for all of us. His story is not only deeply moving and inspirational, but a lesson to us all about the dangers that surround us.
Exceptional read ... and probably a life saver. I had no idea what MCS was until I started teaching college in a "sick building" and cleaning products and fragrance brought on the symptoms... nausea, optical migraines etc. Everyone thought I was acting out when I quit after four years, but Alan's book made me realise I may have dodged a bullet by quitting and by listening to my inner Canary which said loudly ... "danger Will Robinson!" Well written and a must read story. Thank you Alan ... and sorry for your suffering.
Eye opening, especially if you haven't read anything about environmental health and the toxic world man has created by dumping chemicals into everything from our food, water, air, body products, etc. It is also revealed in the book how these things are happening and how unregulated these chemicals are by our government. Whether you have health problems that you've attributed to environmental factors/chemicals or not, this is a book everyone should read to educate themselves on the world we have created and how it is affecting our bodies and future generations. Alan Bell's personal story is truly inspiring because he didn't give up, and we need more people like him in the world today fighting the good fight, speaking out, and educating the public. Awareness is key. Book also has some good resources for further reading and names of people who are trying to change this problem.. As someone with severe health issues, I have seen more doctors than I can even count. Most have been unable to help and some have caused outright harm. I have been on a hellish train ride for more than a decade with symptoms that no one can explain with severe allergies, neurological symptoms, debilitating pain, fatigue, cognitive issues, muscle weakness to the point of being refined to a wheelchair at one point and unable to bathe myself, etc. I bought the book last year, but just found the courage to read it this week and I am so glad that I finally did. It provides hope to know that there are people out there trying to make a difference for people like me who are literally being poisoned by common products that most people use on a daily basis and many you cannot get away from. For those unaffected by chronic illness, author's story of what he went through and how it affected every aspect of his life is very insightful regarding chronic illness. Just that part of his story alone might open someone's eyes who previously lacked empathy for someone in their life struggling with allergies/multiple chemical sensitivities and just how serious and life shattering it can be. Found it extremely interesting, as to the drug that brought him stability and will definitely be researching that avenue and discussing with my physicians as an option. Worth every penny. I am a Registered Nurse and I think this book is one that should be in every single medical school as required reading.
This book does a good job of showing how toxins in our environment hurt us. Alan suffered terribly for many years. His is an amazing story with an uplifting call to action. I have a friend who has had an ongoing illness from exposure to a toxin. Doctors dismiss her (because it is supposed to be safe) while she only becomes weaker. This will be a good book for her to read. It will give her hope that even a very sick person can get well again.
This is an important book. Some will question premise, but as someone who has experienced being poisoned by a toxic building, I know the truth to what Bell is saying. I was lucky -- I was dx before becoming sensitive to everything. I will just have asthma and migraine sensitivities when around certain triggers (perfumes, colognes, scents of all kinds, such as air fresheners, scented laundry and cleaning products, diesel fumes, airplane fuel fumes, for starters) for the rest of my life. These also trigger atrial fibrillation. We are poisoning our world. Be kind to others and to yourself: don't use perfumes, colognes, scents of any kind, even in laundry products.
I found this book with beautiful writing turned the difficult journey Alan Bell experienced into an upliftedtestimony of the human spirit. I found this book exceptional knowledgeable about the many different poisons we are all exposed to on a daily basis. Alan Bell provides practical everyday recommendations for detoxifying one's personal environment. "Poisoned" put me back in touch with the best of the American Spirit and values. Integrity, perservance, knowledge, and practical tips. My blessings to him, and a huge thank you for "Poisoned."
