This is a book that generally speaks to a "senior manager" who is capable of steering company culture but I truly believe anyone can change the culture in their own space. The book did a great job of emphasizing the importance of never standing still and the constant need for change. Yes, not new information but to hear it and see examples is important to your organization's growth. Many great examples of real companies competing from less advantageous positions and ultimately outperforming their competition. Again, the first half is very valuable. I struggled to find more value in the second half of the book. In summary, a very good book to help you evaluate your own competitive standing and help you adjust to succeed in the future.
Competing for the Future is a classic MBA material that closes the gap between the crazy ideas of innovators and enterpreneurs and Porter style strategy to make actual money. Hamel and Prahalad have nailed the concepts and put them in a 3 stages methodology full with examples. Many of the examples that were a bit futuristic are more than common place today. The only thing that maybe is lacking is some additional hard data. Overall highly recommended if you are serious about enterpreneurship and leadership.
Totally worth reading it. As the authors themselves put it, it's a book about making a difference. With plenty of real life experiences, the authors lead us to learn to enlarge our vision and knowledge... to see how we can better compete for the future. Highly recommended.
It is many years since I first bought this book, and indeed distributed copies to a number of people. For mentoring purposes I revisited its contents. With the passage of time certain of the content has become outdated, but the generic principles remain timeless, especially in the chapters to which I refer.
Competing for the Future is a must read for every manager and entrepreneur who wants to change the world. The book does not provide ready-made recipe to catch up with the future, this book teaches you how to think about the future. I highly recommend it.
This stunning book boldly and eloquently trounces several "givens" America's business leaders have been feeding us for the past two decades. First off, Hamel and Prahalad see America's manufacturing decline as anything but inevitable and corporate downsizing as anything but responsible management. What is also strangely refreshing is the authors' gushing yet well-reasoned praise for Japanese firms, which in the year 2001 gives the book yet another, though perhaps unintentional, contrarian edge. Can't wait to hear their take on the Ciscos, Nortels, Lucents and Amazons of the last seven years.
Although a little dated in this edition, the principles were very good. Big on building strategic architecture and core competencies.
The book I received was a different edition and ISBN then the book listed. Nevertheless, this will work. I would have liked the new preface.
