Due to great linguistic barriers, followed by political barriers, this work of the great Russian scientist was overlooked in the West for too many decades. Ironically, it wasn’t until the British scientist, Lovelock, and the American scientist, Margulis, came to roughly the same conclusion as Vernadsky that this book was rediscovered in the West, where it can be appreciated. The great benefit of this particular edition is that it is greatly annotated, with up to date research which either confirms or contradicts some of his assertions.Essentially, Vernadsky puts for the proposition that the global biological ecosystem affects the geology of the planet due to the chemical output of the organisms, and that these effects are so pervasive and so powerful that they affect the chemical composition of the crust. I am not a geologist, so a lot of what he wrote went over my head. Nonetheless, I was able to ascertain enough to appreciate what I was able to understand. The writing itself is sometimes smooth and sometimes cumbersome.
Lightly technical and axiomatic. While dated on some points, in its description of mechanism, and in laying a foundation for argument, the work is exquisite (if not elegant, as such). Highly recommended for anyone who wants a "what," and a "how," with their "why." For the "who, where and when," (with reservations on the "who") refer to Teillhard for the basics. Strange brothers bearing a novel fruit.
I live where this book is a very rare commodity, almost impossible to get in any form.That's why I was extremely satisfied with it.Express shipment, excellent package and very reasonable price.
Fine book
I have had the honour of reading numerous papers by Vernadsky and find as always with genius, a hidden underlaying dimension of truth. The Biosphere is without hesitation a work of scientific spirituality as well as pure scientific genius! In a time when environmental destruction is ramp, and politically controled scientific stupidity proliferates, logical hope and science is at hand. With Vernadsky science personifies a bridge between life and its meaning. Science is indeed the search for truth, and Vernadsky biosphere is a must for youth!!!!!
