If you want to design quality websites and haven't read this book you are doing your visitors a disservice. It's that simple. Don't Make Me Think is well written, well structured, easy to read and short. It covers usability the way we should design sites, with a just enough content, easily digested and quick to consume. You could get the same content elsewhere but it would be a lot more work and a lot more poorly written. 11 stars.
A very helpful usability manual that doesn't read like a textbook. I read a lot of technical books, and this has to be among my favorites. As of late 2018 the information is still relevant, in case you're wondering, and I don't see it becoming outdated in the next few years (unfortunately--because if the book did become outdated it would mean someone fixed something big in the usability world).Steve Krug seems like a really nice guy. As a writer, he is NOT the person who will bludgeon you over the head and call you an idiot for not knowing the thing you're reading his work specifically to learn, an unfortunate habit that afflicts many writers of technology books and articles (I'm looking at you, Joel Spolsky). All of the figures and comics peppered into the book include full transcriptions. Nothing seems lost or out of place in the Kindle version either.If you ever write user interfaces for anything from the Web to native software to even email newsletters with a lot of buttons and links, you should read this book. If you write the user interface for the Kindle review-writing page, you definitely need to read this book, because I can't scroll up or down within this text input.
Great book for anyone that is maintaining a website for a small business or organization. Not a technical book about writing code. Gives you a clear direction and guidance about how the vast majority of users surf the net and how to make your site easy for the majority of users. Less words, more photos, clear and obvious navigation. Great examples of both real and pretend sites that are good and bad and why they are good or bad.
Steve Krug's Don’t Make Me Think is one of my favorite books on website usability.Krug is an esteemed expert and author with a sometimes wicked sense of humor. He also has a down-to-earth, no-nonsense approach to explaining the principles of usability as applied to websites.Don't Make Me Think is a valuable resource for large organizations, small businesses, and individuals who need guidance for(1) Launching a new website;(2) Undergoing a website redesign; or(3) Making corrections and enhancements for an existing site.Available in printed or digital editions, Don't Make Me Think is a valuable guide for individuals who are starting small businesses.
I am currently designing a web site for my small business and I will use the guidance from this book above all the other design books I have read. I get it! If it's not easy to use, people will not enjoy my web site, and may not return. Steve Krug has watched how people use web sites, and the concepts in his book are smart and, well, common sense. When I go looking for something on the net, I too, don't want to think, until necessary. I just want to click on the obvious and get where I am going, much like scanning the newspaper until I find what interests me, then I focus. I wish that every site I visit was built around usability, because "clever and intricate" is usually not why I am there. This book spells it out in a quick-read that is very clear and concise, and I am very glad I found it before I built my web site.
My review concerns the 2002 2nd edition. There is a much more recent 3rd edition (which is also much more expensive). I believe there is great value in either. And I would heartily recommend this book.The author is a consultant making his living evaluating others' web sites. He approaches evaluation from the standpoint of the user seeking to fulfill user needs. The quintessential marketing approach.The book steps us thru the mindset needed to focus, foremost, on the user's experience and the user's goals in accessing a web site. The title of the book refers understanding users' well enough so that a web site is written to be essentially self-evident -- thus avoiding forcing to THINK about what the web site wants or expects. What is expected is just...obvious.He steps thru many of the means that web sites use to provide such an experience, focusing heavily on effective site design & navigation. He also strongly recommend reducing verbiage by 75% as a rule.All in all, I found his focus on the user & his attention to a site's navigational structure to be very useful. Thru his experience, he is able to provide both positive & negative examples of these and other points thruout the book.This is one author that I sense I trust his judgment and enjoy his writing style. As one measure of that, I've already purchased a few of the books he highly recommended in his "Recommended Reading" section. Those, too, appear to be excellent books written from the same place with the user in the center.
And that means you'll very easily absorb, understand and retain the information. This book is used as a text for a UX/UI for Web Designers class at my college.
