As a mother of five children—including one who is a competitive gymnast—I am always concerned about proper nutrition/diet for my family. I have read extensively about the Paleo way of eating, but I was reluctant to give it a try because, quite frankly, I was worried this gluten-free lifestyle would be ill-received in my household by a couple of my finicky eaters. I also admit that I thought this diet would be a headache to implement. I am happy that I received a free copy of The Paleo Cookbook for Kids: 83 Family-Friendly Paleo Diet Recipes for Gluten-Free Kids (Salinas Press, 2013) because it proved me wrong on both accounts. In addition to containing 83 healthful Paleo recipes that are appealing to kids of all ages, this book also offers techniques to help encourage your child to try new foods, such as offering small tastings of several different foods (rather than a large serving of only one or two foods), and presenting foods in a fun manner (i.e., Bento box style, dinner for breakfast, etc.). One of my favorite parts of this book was a chart that assists new Paleo subscribers with how to substitute non-Paleo foods with Paleo-friendly ones. While some conversions on the chart tugged at my common sense (abandoning peanut butter for nut-based butters), others came as a delightful surprise (substituting grated cauliflower for rice). Our family made the Greenie Smoothie, which was delightful even though I am not a big fan of its “green ingredientâ€â€”avocado. While I have no plans to become a Paleo Convert, I do plan to make additional recipes from this book.
Overall, great for those dedicated to healthy diet. Here are my pro's and con's of this cookbook.Pro's:Provides a seven day meal plan to introduce dietProvides a list of substitutesUses a healthy, diverse array of foodsCon's:Ingredients are expensive, which could break your food budgetRecipes are often time consuming in preparationIn some cases, recipes call for multiple appliance uses (i.e. stove top, to oven, to stove top)In trying Sweet potato pancakes it said pumpkin could be substituted, but failed to offset for moisture content of pumpkinIf you can overcome the con's, this book is great. Personally, I don't believe it's one I would use as often. This book was given to me for a honest review.
I am a mother. I am also a pretty big food addict. Most importantly, as an online lifestyle consultant for my own website, I teach about nutrition and give tips on transitioning to alternative diets including raw vegan, macrobiotic, and of course PALEO which is the subject of this book. I appreciated this books' introduction, although much of it was information I had already researched but for the average beginner, the introduction is very persuasive and gives excellent, common sense reasons why to switch to a more whole foods diet, whether vegan or paleo. The interesting commonality between both subcultures-- "raw vegan" and "paleo"-- is that they both espouse the dangers of GRAINS, gluten, and the hard to digest starches that lead to literally all of the degenerative diseases on the rise today. The book has wonderful meals and delicious recipes. My favorites SO FAR that I've experimented with (the first night of reading, no less) were the sweet potato pancakes and the almond butter brownies. My husband, on the other hand, his favorites were the curried tuna nori rolls and the breakfast burritos (we substituted ground lamb instead of the ground turkey in the book's recipe). I look forward to implementing more of these meal ideas into our family diet.
At first glance the Paleo Diet seems like another strict meal plan that you simply can’t stick with.However upon further inspection you will find a vast array of delectable meals that are not only great tasting but good for you as well.This book is broken up into two parts. An informative first part that describes the ends and outs of the plan. And a second part with recipes like Prosciutto wrapped Frittata, Potato Pancakes, Banana Muffins and Triple Berry Cobblers.There is also a 10 step guide to help with the transition and to keep your kids happy during the start of the plan. This includes meals specifically for lunch so the stress of preparing lunches foryour kids will be eliminated.So if you’re wanting to try the Paleo diet this book is a great start to a new lifestyle of healthy eating.
