Absolutely the best learning tool for Latinos (or really anyone) to master real-life English. It's a picture dictionary with images grouped by theme, and definitions/descriptions of the images written below in English and in Spanish. I used it my first year of teaching English to Latino adults in a job-readiness program, then hauled them back and forth with me to the local community college when I started teaching there. I like that the vocabulary is taught in groups of words where appropriate, because this is how we actually use them. Looking at the pictures while reading the words increases retention and understanding at all levels, as does seeing the words and images grouped by usage rather than alphabetically. If you are a teacher or tutor, check out the questions at the bottom of most pages - they can spark an entire discussion or writing activity to enforce the words covered.Adults and children love to use this book, and I find myself reviewing pages on work-related verbs from time to time to keep my Spanish updated. There are entire pages devoted to various USEFUL topics such as landscaping tools, medical supplies, classroom phrases, emotions, phrasal verbs, outdoor games types of buildings - just about any topic you'd want to teach or learn. These books go perfectly with the entire Side-by-Side teaching series, but you could also use them with any other resource. I own most picture dictionaries on the market, and these are the ones that I'd miss if I lost them. These are the ones my students reach for, too.
I LOVE this CD for the music used to teach adult ESL! There was a CD that provided worksheets that went along with each song in a 2006 or 2007 version I borrowed from a school's store room. ( We can't find it now) I wish this purchase had included the extra CD with worksheets I know exists somewhere with the songs. That's what I had expected to get in one package.... The songs alone are great, but now I have to make up my own vocabulary/grammar practice sheets to go with each song. Also, this purchase does NOT include the lyrics to each song; ONLY the music to the songs is shipped on one CD. If anyone knows where I can find the second CD that goes with these songs and provides practice sheets and lyrics for each song, I would love to find that ISBN number!! I think for 25 dollars I should have received both CDs.
This book was one of the required textbooks for my husband's ESL college course for beginners, and one day he showed it to my mom (who also does not speak English but wants to learn). She was really excited to see all of the pictures describing the vocab because it was easier to understand. She is almost 60 years old and cannot stare at pages and pages of text - the big colorful illustrations are better for her. So we ordered one for her through Amazon Prime, it arrived really quickly (I think less than 2 days?) and she really loves it! There is even a CD in the back of the book that she now listens to in the car when she's running errands. Each chapter is filled with vocabulary lists that correspond to the many, many drawings on each page. Like the title says, it is a *picture dictionary*, so you won't see a lot of text or writing practice exercises. But that's okay for my mom, who prefers this simpler layout and takes notes and practices on her own separate notebook anyway. The lessons are catered to beginners of ESL, and provides really practical word lists that directly relate to everyday life (chores, food, health, leisure, etc). Definitely recommend for beginners who respond better to visual aids!
I am a self studying Korean learner. I very much recommend this book as a stepping stone tool, especially if you have already grasped the Hangul alphabet and can tie it in with making some words as there are no Romanizations available or any CD that you can follow and learn along with. I still purchased this more as a second step for reading and learning a variety of words. Some of the sections in book include: personal info, family, health, everyday activities, hobbies, money numbers calendar clothes colors foods, home school job travel entertainment nature, shopping travel and descriptions. I also bought McGraw-Hill's Korean Illustrated Dictionary http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071769005/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i04?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which does have Romanizations (if you are looking for a good beginners dictionary-with CD) as a 1st dictionary and Word by Word for the 2nd one. I recommend all the books in this series for beginning-level English learners. This picture dictionary is particularly useful if the student is an absolute beginner and has no English literacy whatsoever. There is no need to purchase it new, however, as it is solely a dictionary. It might not be entirely helpful if you were to use it in a very rural setting or a developing country since the pictures represent things most found in cities or developed countries.
