I had to just review this book now, I am only up to chapter four and just loving it. A beautiful piece of Australian life in the Gulf Country. I went straight to the photos in the back to connect with the people and checked out Google Maps for the location. Love the comments about always wearing red lip stick. One day I would love to visit the Gulf Country. Great read!
Very interesting and great true life story
Toni Tapp Coutts moved to Victoria with husband Shaun at the beginning of their marriage, but they knew before too long that they missed the vast outback spaces of the Northern Territory so when Shaun was offered a job back at Victoria River Downs Station, not too far from Killarney Station where Toni had grown up, they decided to take it on. But after some years the offer of a position on McArthur River Station in the Gulf Country, six hundred kilometres away and near the Queensland border meant they were moving once again.Toni had two small children, Ben and Megan by that time, and Shaun was often away mustering for weeks at a time. But Toni was never lonely as there were always people around. She made a lot of friends and some of her tasks on the station were cook, nurse, housekeeper and even counsellor to the vast number of people who moved through the area.Toni loved the Gulf Country and was to have one more child, Shannon while there. The love and enjoyment of the vast countryside was filled with balls, camp drafting, running the cattle station, riding in rodeos as well as the large number of ‘not so nice’ wildlife they encountered...My Outback Life is the sequel to A Sunburnt Childhood and continues to capture Toni’s interesting and varied life. Filled with adventures, humour and a love for the countryside that the majority of us have never seen, and never will, My Outback Life is hugely interesting and well worth reading. A heartwarming and delightful memoir which I have no hesitation in recommending.
